Grief, Marriage And Trauma Therapy – A Brief Guide to 3 types of Therapy by Ryan Fitzgerald
Grief therapy, marriage therapy and trauma therapy are three types of therapy and counseling that can be useful to you in different cases of emotional and mental disturbance. For your ease of reference, this article briefly describes their areas of application.
Grief therapy, marriage therapy and trauma therapy are just three of the many types of therapy and counseling that can be useful to you in different cases of emotional and mental disturbance. Since it’s impossible to predict life’s course, and since anyone around the world may be in need of one of these types of professional help some time in their lives, we will briefly describe the significance if these three type of therapy below:
Grief Therapy: This therapy is useful for helping individuals affected by any kind of loss. Most commonly, it is the loss of some one near to you through death. But grief can also affect us in cases of divorce, or when a relationship has ended irrevocably. It can also be brought about by the loss of a job. Whatever the underlying reason, it involves intense sadness and other surprising emotions like shock, anger and guilt. This is quite normal.
But it can turn unhealthy in some cases, and we might linger longer than usual in that state of sadness. Grief therapy from qualified therapists and psychologists can help us grieve in a healthy manner, so that we can move on once our feelings have been expressed fully.
Marriage Therapy: This therapy helps us develop better relationship skills, like conflict resolution and effective communication. Unlike popular perceptions, marriage therapy is useful not only when a marital bond has already been strained, due to infidelity, sexual or financial difficulties, and physical or emotional abuse. It can also be used proactively, to identify future problems that could crop up, and to nip them in the bud.
For instance, premarital counseling can be useful for people who have witnessed only dysfunctional marital relationships in their own families. It can also be useful for couples with very different social and cultural backgrounds, to help each partner negotiate the differences between them.
Trauma Therapy: This is used to treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD, which can develop after life threatening and traumatic events, like war, a natural disaster, assault, rape or a car or plane crash. This therapy attempts to help people work through their shock and trauma in a healthy way. In PTSD, the normal psychological reactions of shock and mental numbness to such situations don’t alleviate after some time, but instead worsen with time, accompanied by other symptoms like nightmares, constant anxiety and repetitive thoughts about the event.
Trauma Therapy tries to help people with PTSD overcome their fear and anxiety through a combination of psychotherapy, medication and cognitive- behavioral therapy. PTSD responds quite well to professional treatment, and often needs only 6-12 weeks of therapy in most cases.
