The main focus of this therapy approach is fostering hope between the spouses, using principles from the Bible and depending on the Holy Spirit to work in the couple and help them deal with challenges and problems. A variety of psychological theories are integrated with Christianity to make this counseling method.
In hope-focused marriage counseling, hope is defined as having willpower or desire to change, knowledge of how to change, as well as having waitpower or a faith that Jesus is always there and helping us get through it. Hope is a must to change and is therefor emphasized througout the counseling sessions.
For many marital therapists and spouses the goal is to improve marriages and reduce the divorce rate, while others opinion is that the goal is figuring out what is best for each individual. In hope-focused marriage counseling divorce is considered a failure, however, that does not mean that saving the marriage is always the most important consideration.
